A leading Kent visitor attraction is encouraging schools to join KM reading initiative Buster’s Book Club and help pupils develop a lifelong love of books.
Canterbury Tales has pledged to give away 30 child entry vouchers to every school that signs up to the home reading scheme by Thursday, December 17.
As an added bonus applications received within the deadline will also enjoy a hefty discount on the scheme, paying less than half price per class.
Simon Dolby of the KM Charity Team, which runs Buster’s Book Club, said: “Schools will be able to use these vouchers as an extra special reward for a top reading class of the week.
“We’re thrilled that Canterbury Tales is supporting child literacy in this way and helping us to encourage pupils to excel at reading.”
Buster’s Book Club sets every pupil an individual home reading target by year group. Each week a parent or guardian signs the child’s reading bookmark to confirm the number of minutes spent reading or being read to at home.
The top or most improved class for reading is announced during school assembly and presented with a Reading Class of the Week Trophy.
Pupils also compete in a series of inter school reading challenges staged throughout the year concluding with an annual Kent wide record attempt. Children are rewarded with incentives and prizes including tickets to Leeds Castle or Silver Blades ice rink, book vouchers and storytelling visits.
Buster’s Book Club is supported by Kent County Council, Medway Council, Mini Babybel, Specsavers, Orbit South, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), Leeds Castle, Circle Housing Russet, and Three R’s Teacher Recruitment.
Schools registering by Thursday, December 17 will have the literacy initiative in place for January 2016. Complete the online enquiry form at www.bustersbookclub.co.uk.
