People working with vulnerable adults or teenagers have a new scheme to help them teach literacy skills.
Bookbinders is a scheme designed to support groups with poor literacy skills that are outside of mainstream education. Specifically designed to support former homeless clients of Porchlight, the scheme organisers believe it is also perfect for young people not in education or training (NEETs) as well as schools wanting to support parents where English is an additional language.
Bookbinders is loosely based on a book group format but with a much broader remit enabling a softer involvement – or re-introduction – to reading and practical literacy. Groups have the chance to win prizes including cinema tickets and pizza parties – as well as becoming Reading Millionaires by collectively reading more than one million minutes during the year.
On Thursday, 26 January 2017, at the Abbots Barton Hotel in Canterbury, the KM Charity Team will host a briefing event for Bookbinders. Organisations can request free tickets to attend the briefing session.
Simon Dolby from the KM Charity Team said: “We are really excited about the Bookbinders scheme and its potential to help people improve their futures by improving their literacy skills! We're delighted to launch the initiative with homelessness charity Porchlight and hope that many other organisations working with NEETS adults will join us at this free event. We also encourage anyone working with disaffected teenage groups, as well as parent groups where English is not their first language to join us for what is sure to be an informative day.”
Mark Cotman, operational director at Abbots Barton Hotel said: "With literacy being high on the agenda as a topic nationwide we are pleased to be able to assist. We at the Abbots Barton Hotel are privileged to be able to support the KM Charity Team in their further endeavours to support the local community and further afield and are delighted to be able to host this event for them. After our work with the team and Kent Cooks this has further embellished our commitment and with "
