Volunteers are being sought to help three charities with a growing workload.
The Citizens Advice Bureau is preparing to launch new outreach services: at Gibson Drive, Kings Hill; at Holmesdale Community College, Snodland, where an all-day service will replace the existing half-day service on Fridays; and from the community centre in Twisden Road, East Malling.
CAB manager Angela Newey said: “Athough it’s hard work, it’s good to know you can actually make a difference.”
All volunteers are given a comprehensive training programme and need to commit to just one day a week.
The Samaritans' Maidstone branch is keen to recruit between 10 and 20 more volunteers.
Director Graham - the Samaritans don’t use surnames - said: “We are already very busy and we are expecting an increase in calls with the credit crunch.”
The charity is holding an open day at the Grove Green Community Centre, Grovewood Drive, Maidstone, on January 25.
Volunteers attend six half-day training sessions. Once qualified they are expected to work four hours a week, with some night-time shifts.
Graham said: “It can be quite emotionally draining, so we strictly limit the number of hours each volunteer can do.”
Hi Kent, the charity that works with the deaf and hard-of-hearing, is also after more volunteers in the Maidstone area.
Many elderly people have difficulty re-tubing their NHS hearing aids, or changing the small batteries.
Hi Kent volunteers carry out these important tasks for them at regular clinics.
Volunteer co-ordinator Jill Townsend said: “We urgently need new volunteers, especially in the town centre, Barming, Coxheath and Staplehurst.”
After training, volunteers need only contribute three hours per month, and expenses are paid.
