Urging colleagues to jump off the cliffs at Ramsgate is likely to be an activity for Thanet Council workers on December 6.

It is anticipated a council team will muster to take part in the Kent Charity Challenge abseil in aid of charity CLIC Sargent and the Kent and Medway Walking Bus Group.

But behind the scenes there is a more serious side to the support of the council for the abseil, which is also supported by the Thanet Extra.

Enabling such events depends on the help of Thanet Council oficers who are.

working closely with organisers of the event to help children stricken with cancer.

Council events co-ordinator Wendy Morris has assessed the clifftop area at Screaming Alley, West Cliff, to ensure it is suitable.

Coastal engineer Mike Humber and a health and safety inspector have also had to give their go ahead for the venue.

Wendy Morris explained: “We needed to make sure the site was appropriate and that its use was not going to have an adverse effect on residents.

“Initially we have a site meeting and look at access to the area and carry out a risk assessment.”

“It is great to have something different like this for the area. The council very much like to support charity events.”

She said Mike Humber was giving up his own time for the whole day to work with Avalon who are managing the actual abseil.

Dropping off the edge of an 80ft cliff might be considered perilous but with full professional and expert backing, there is little to fear.
