An excited Mister Maker fan met the popular CBeebies television presenter and enjoyed her first trip to the theatre thanks to a green travel contest for schools.

Eight year-old Zahra Costa struck lucky when her class at Gravel Hill Primary School in Bexleyheath came top in a walk to school competition run by the KM Charity Team.

Participating schools encouraged pupils to walk, cycle, scoot, or park and stride to school and Penguins class were crowned the winners after all 30 of them did so on the contest date of October 4.

Their reward included a family ticket to the Mister Maker And The Shapes Live show for one lucky winner. To decide who should scoop the prize all of the children’s names were put into a hat - and Zahra’s was pulled out.

She, her mum and her siblings Leila-Rubi, seven, and Raif, 10, charged to the Orchard Theatre in Dartford on Sunday, October 29 to see the show and meet the eponymous star, Phil Gallagher.

Zahra said: “I was really happy when I won, and keen to share it with my family. The show was amazing, and I liked joining in the Shapes moves. Mister Maker’s dancing moves were very impressive!

“It was the first time I had been to the theatre to see a live show, and it was a lovely experience for the whole family. Mum brought sweets, and we had family photos taken afterwards with Mister Maker.”

The KM Charity Team provide schools with green travel services including Active Wow (Walk on Wednesday) and Green Footsteps as well as home reading scheme Buster’s Book Club. A variety of resources keep pupils enthusiastic about walking to school including competitions offering trophies, certificates, tickets to leisure attractions, and storytime visits as prizes.

Celebrity storytellers include CBeebies stars Phil Gallagher and Joanna Adeyinka-Burford, along with acclaimed children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth, and singer and television presenter Cheryl Baker.

Organisations supporting the KM Charity Team’s work include London Borough of Bexley, Kent County Council, Medway Council, Countrystyle Recycling, Bel UK, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Golding Homes, Orbit, Specsavers, Eurostar, Whitefriars, Jelf, Gallagher Aggregates, Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons’ Charity, Maidstone Borough Council, Ashford Borough Council, Swale Borough Council, Canterbury City Council, and Volker Highways.
