A FORMER senior police officer and television presenter has been given a taste of life behind bars.

Retired superintendent David Hatcher spent several hours "banged-up" at Medway’s new police headquarters.

Mr Hatcher, 57, who was area commander in Medway for two years from 1993, did a 10-hour stint behind bars for the Wheelchair Foundation, raising £2,800.

Mr Hatcher, who used to a role on BBC 1’s Crimewatch and is now president of Medway Rotary Club, said: “It wasn’t too bad being locked up because I hadn’t done anything wrong and I knew I was getting out.

“And if doing 10 hours behind bars can give people the freedom they need by having a wheelchair, then it’s a small price to pay.”

Chief Insp Des Keers who works from Medway’s new HQ, said: “Kent police in Medway were delighted with the opportunity to support David in his charitable effort.”
