National Non-Fiction November concludes next week.

Organised by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, the initiative encourages schools, libraries, book groups and families to organise events and activities celebrating non-fiction books for young readers.

The theme for this year is ‘transport and travel around the world’, and the federation has challenged groups and young readers to send in designs showing what the vehicle of tomorrow might look like.

The organising groups of the best entries will win visits by children’s author and book illustrator James Gulliver Hancock, while the children responsible for the best designs will be rewarded with family day tickets to heritage railways such as the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex or the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The organising groups of the runners-up in three different categories will also win five Lonely Planet Kids books.

The closing date for submitting entries is Friday December 6, and the winners will be announced in January. Find out more at fcbg.org.uk.

Given the priority of climate change, the competition organisers have expressed particular interest in seeing designs that explore the concept of sustainability.

Schools interested in encouraging pupils’ enthusiasm for non-fiction and green travel are invited to sign up for the KM Charity Team schemes Buster’s Book Club and Active Wow.

The two initiatives employ a spirit of friendly competition to encourage children to read more at home and use green travel to get to and from school.

Individual schools’ classes compete against each other for weekly trophies, and the winners of monthly, county-wide, inter-school challenges are rewarded with vouchers to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.

Schools that sign up to Buster’s Book Club by December 1 will be entered into a prize draw to win two free tickets for the Eurostar.
