Featherby Infant School has claimed victory once again at the KM Walk to School Song Contest.
Out of four groups of finalists the Gillingham youngsters took first place with their rendition of the Katrina and the Waves hit Walking on Sunshine. No stranger to success the school also won the competition in 2013 with the best version of family favourite Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.
Staged by the KM Charity Team with the support of Three R's Teacher Recruitment and Independent Music Productions (IMP) in Canterbury the annual contest challenged schools to create the best overall singing performance. Choirs were judged on vocal performance, choreography and originality.
Pupils also had the opportunity to use percussion instruments and to change the lyrics to reflect the walk to school theme.
The three choirs pipped at the post were The Canterbury Primary School, Bethersden Primary School in Ashford and St Francis’ Catholic Primary School, Maidstone.
Contest judge Simon Dolby said: “They all gave such strong performances and sang their hearts out but Featherby gave that little extra and are very worthy winners.”
The runners up were commended for their efforts with Canterbury Primary being awarded best adaptation of the song. The best own lyrics award went to Bethersden Primary and St Francis’ Catholic Primary received the best vocal performance accolade.
Featherby Infant School’s choir will be invited to perform at the Kent Walk to School Awards in February 2016 as well as Buster’s Big Bash in May 2016. The other finalists will also be invited to attend Buster’s Big Bash, the annual walk to school mini festival and record attempt to create Kent’s biggest walking bus.
Julie Whyman, assistant head of Featherby Infant and Nursery School, said: “The children had a wonderful time visiting the recording studio, an experience they will never forget.
“All our children take a great pride in their Walk on Wednesday and always look forward to new challenges. We would like to thank everyone concerned and look forward to singing live next year.”
