Members of Canterbury's Inner Wheel Club held a Frugal Lunch last week to raise funds for an innovative reading scheme.
KM Charity Team CEO Simon Dolby briefed members on the wide remit of the educational charity as well as the success of Buster's Book Club. To give support to the initiative the club staged its annual Frugal Lunch where bread and soup are served to the members who make a donation to a cause.
Mr Dolby said: "I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the members of the club. They were enthusiastic about the work of our charity and asked detailed questions. The £150 donation they provided will enable us to support an additional school with Buster's Book Club locally."
Buster’s Book Club aims to get pupils excited about reading for pleasure at home. Each child is given a home reading target of a set number of minutes and then whole classes take part in a series of challenges throughout the year.
Pupils can read by themselves, to others, or listen to an audio book – or a combination of all three – in order to notch up their reading minutes, while a parent or guardian must sign a special bookmark recording the minutes achieved.
The children encourage fellow classmates to meet their targets – or feel compelled to make an extra effort with their own reading – in order to win the Reading Class of the Week Trophy within their schools.
Tickets to leading leisure attractions such as Wildwood animal park, Diggerland, and Leeds Castle, are awarded to classes top or most improved for reading in competitions involving all participating schools in their district.
Buster’s Book Club is supported by organisations including Gatwick Airport, The Ernest Cook Trust, Little Cheyne Court, Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), Orbit, Medway Council, Specsavers, Hornby, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, Crown Foundation, The Gibbons Trust, Kent County Council, and Westwood Cross.
