Folkestone racecourse is playing host to one of the KM Charity Challenge’s most popular events, the zipwire, and as always the going promises to be good.
From four storeys up on the roof of the main stand, participants will be able to whiz down the 150-yard wire in a thrilling descent to the racecourse itself and it’s a fair bet that those taking part will experience an adrenaline rush like no other.
This is the third time the racecourse has staged the event, which this year takes place on Sunday, March 22 and racecourse manager Emma Santer says that backing the community is very important.
She said: “As the only racecourse in Kent we like to do our bit to support local good causes and we know that charities are struggling to maintain their income during the economic slowdown and want to do what we can to help.”
To take part in the Folkestone racecourse zipwire participants must raise a minimum of £75 in sponsorship. Proceeds from the event will be divided between the Pilgrims Hospices, which will receive 70 per cent of the funds raised, and the children’s road safety charity Kent Walking Bus Project, which will receive 30 per cent of sponsorship raised.

Two years ago the event raised a record £18,000 for charity and organisers are hoping the event is a big a success this year.
The Folkestone racecourse has a proud history of charity involvement and has staged charity race days in aid of Demelza House and MacMillan Cancer Support amongst others. There are regular bucket collections on race days with the last one netting £627 for Kent Air Ambulance and race day tickets are given away to schools, firms and community groups, who raffle them to raise funds. Disabled people, holding a blue badge are also given free entry to the racecourse along with their carers.
Simon Dolby, KM Walk to School chairman said: “This zip wire charity event is a very exciting sponsored event and I hope the public and south Kent businesses will take up this challenge.”
Businesses can earn publicity through the pages of the Kentish Express by agreeing to sponsor an element of the costs for the zip wire equipment. For information contact Simon Dolby on 07989 164 752.
