A roadshow promoting green travel to school was in Kent high streets this week.

Staff from Specsavers greeted families shopping in town centres to promote the walk to school campaign, which is close to hitting its target of removing 200,000 school-run car journeys from the county's roads this academic year. So far the 130 schools involved in the initiative have recorded 417,000 green journeys and removed 190,000 car journeys.

Specsavers walk to school ambassador, Jason Gillan, who is regional chairman of Specsavers, is confident the small army of families walking, cycling and using scooters to travel to school, will smash the target.

Mr Gillan said: “With the news focusing on air pollution, health issues and childhood obesity, there has never been a more important time for families to join the walk to school campaign.”

Simon Dolby, organiser of the KM Walk to School schemes used by 42,000 families at 130 schools in the county, said: “We still have a long way to go to reach 200,000 car journeys removed figure. We will make a massive effort to pass the target and help to make Kent a cleaner and greener county.”

School staff have until July 1 to sign up for Super Wow to be part of the campaign for next academic year.

As well as Specsavers, the campaign is supported by Orbit South, Golding Homes, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Eurostar, Countrystyle Recycling, Whites Transport, Leeds Castle, Wildwood, Kent County Council, Medway Council, Ashford International Hotel, Volker Highways, Whitefriars, Maidstone Borough Council, Ashford Borough Council, and the London Borough of Bexley.
