The shelves of a primary school’s library are fit to burst after pupils won a green-travel competition.

Chartham Primary school won an amazing 400 books in a special green-travel draw run by the KM Charity Team.

The primary is an enthusiastic participant in walk-to-school initiative Super Wow.

Assistant head teacher Iain Rudgyard said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to receive these books in recognition for all the work we’ve done on Super Wow.

“We’re aware of the need for children to be walking to school and the need for exercise.”

Run by the KM Charity Team, Super Wow encourages families to walk to school, with classes competing each week to be awarded the Green Class of the Week Trophy.

A monthly inter-school green-travel challenge awards winning classes tickets to leisure attractions or visits by storytellers.

The school’s pupils were delighted to receive the books, but one girl was also particularly keen to stress the health and environmental benefits of schemes such as Super Wow.

Daisy: “Asthma’s quite important to me: it’s something that’s hard to cope with. Sometimes it can be big; sometimes it can be small.

“The main problem is to do with pollution and gas in the air and stuff like that. If people would walk to school more, there would be less gas in the air and less problems with asthma and breathing.”

KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby said: “Chartham Primary richly deserves its prize for the whole-hearted way that it has embraced Super Wow.

“And the new books now filling its library shelves are yet more proof of the many ways that schools can benefit from Super Wow.

“It doesn’t just help to improve the local environment and children’s health and physical well-being, but can also play a role in literacy and improving educational performance.”
