Gun death victim's mother launches charity

The mother of a 22-year-old Kent woman shot dead in a London department store by her ex-boyfriend has launched a charity to help people at risk of similar attacks.

Claire Bernal from Groombridge, near Tunbridge Wells, was murdered as she served customers in Harvey Nichols three years ago. Her killer, Michael Pech, then turned the gun on himself.

After Claire broke off her relationship with Pech, he began stalking her and was then charged with harassment. He was on bail when he walked into her place of work in Knightsbridge and shot her dead in front of her colleagues.

Police were cleared of failing Claire, but her mother, Tricia Bernal, still thinks more can be done to predict the actions of violent and unstable people like Pech.

She and the mothers of two other women who have lost daughters to attacks are now going to campaign for the creation of Family Justice Centres, which help victims of domestic abuse.

There is currently just one in Croydon.
