Primary pupils are off to see wolves, otters and elk after winning a green travel challenge.
Herons class at Valley Invicta Primary came top in a walk-to-school challenge operated by green travel scheme Super Wow.
The Aylesford school’s participation in Super Wow was made possible by funding from Highways England and engineering firms Jacobs, Atkins and Kier.
They were presented with their vouchers to Wildwood animal park near Herne Bay – as well as a copy of Anthony Cooper’s eco-themed children’s book The Curious Tale of the Dodo – at a special assembly by Palma Black of Atkins.
The assembly took place on Children in Need Day on Friday November 16, and the pupils came specially dressed in spotty clothes or pyjamas to mark the occasion.
More children at the primary will be celebrating soon, with copies of The Curious Tale of the Dodo going to Valley Invicta’s Green Class of the Week in each of the next two weeks.
Super Wow encourages families to walk to school, with classes competing each week to be awarded the Green Class of the Week Trophy. A monthly inter-school green travel challenge awards winning classes tickets to leisure attractions or visits by storytellers.
The scheme is run by the KM Charity team, and supported by Specsavers, Eurostar, Maidstone, Kent, Ashford, Medway and Bexley councils, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Whitefriars, Whites Transport, Ashford International Hotel, Orbit, Volker Highways, Countrystyle Recycling, London Array, EduKit, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes).
KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby said: “Many congratulations to Herons Class. The children did amazingly well to achieve so many green-travel miles, and they have really set an excellent example for other classes to follow.
“I hope they have a fantastic day out at Wildwood.”
