A lucky schoolboy was treated to a historic experience after he was crowned king of a creative writing competition.

Arya Manivannan of Hempstead Junior School, Gillingham, became the boss of beautiful Leeds Castle – also known as “the loveliest castle in the world” – following his fantastic submission to the ‘I Spy’ contest which asked pupils to provide a detailed description of their walk to school.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed being the boss of Leeds Castle for the day as it’s offered me a unique opportunity. I’ve loved looking around the castle and having the birds perched on my hand!”

He added: “I don’t think it’s very easy being the boss as you have a lot of responsibility! I think when I leave school I would like to train to become a doctor.”

Ian Bowles, Castle Supervisor at Leeds Castle, said: “It’s been a pleasure to spend the day with the new boss. He’s a very nice gentleman and hasn’t been too tough on me. We inspected the entire facility and he noted down some areas for improvement, and Arya shows signs of becoming an excellent leader in the future.”

The bespoke Kentish attraction based in Maidstone is one of the county’s largest tourism spots and is home to the world-famous gardens and maze.

A number of activities Arya took part in included handling the keys to the castle, enjoying a specially prepared lunch, a visit to the Avery for some falconry, opening the newly refurbished education centre and naming a pair of newborn baby owls – Timon and Pumbaa.

Organised by the KM Charity Team, the contest was promoted to 50,000 children across the county who partake in green travel schemes KM Walk to School or home reading initiatives Buster’s Book Club and Reading Bug.

Simon Dolby, chief executive at the charity, said: “We are extremely grateful for Leeds Castle enabling us the opportunity to reward hard-working children like Arya with such a fantastic prize. He has enjoyed a variety of great activities throughout the day and really made a statement as the new boss in town!”
