Pupils from Delce Junior School in Rochester are keen to hop aboard a new walking bus scheme that takes the stress out of the school run.
What makes it unusual is the scheme has been organised by a completely different school.
Staff from nearby St Peter’s Primary have set up the walking bus to help parents who need to take children to both of the schools. The extra journey between schools had left some parents struggling to be on time.
The new service allows parents to wait with their younger children at St Peter’s while the older siblings go to Delce Juniors on the walking bus.
The scheme is part of the KM Walk to School campaign, which aims to encourage an active lifestyle from an early age and reduce traffic congestion.
Anthony Jordan from Specsavers attended the walking bus launch this week. “Specsavers supports KM Walk to School and its work to ensure the health of future generations. It is wonderful to see the children in action this morning,” he said.
Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, said: “Walking buses offer a safe, healthy and eco-friendly option to get to school. Everyone wears high visibility tabards and the pupils are supervised by approved school staff and parents as they walk along a set route.”
He added: “Schools are currently signing up for our walk to school packages so they can have green travel in place for the next academic year. Our resources make it easy for organisers and fun for the children.”
