This year marks the 21st anniversary of the KM Charity Walk, and participants across the county are getting ready to start their stroll.
One family taking on the 10 mile trek on Sunday, June 26 are using the fundraiser to help support a foundation very close to their hearts.
Debbie Barnes, 43, of Sycamore Road, Rochester, said: “My beloved mum died suddenly last May after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease just four days prior. Her disease should have been picked up months sooner than it was, but doctors simply were not looking for it so she faced inadequate testing. My son Joshua, sister-in-law Katherine, nephew Toby and myself wanted to take part in the Charity Walk to raise money for the MNDA Kent, and to raise vital awareness.”
She added: “I’m also training to compete in the 2016 London Marathon – also to fundraise for MNDA – so this event will serve as a great fitness test!”
The family challenge day provides ramblers the option of both five and 10 mile routes. Starting and concluding at Maidstone’s Grade II Georgian mansion Mote House, walkers will pass through much charming Kentish countryside as well as Leeds Castle; also known as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’.
All participants will be presented with a limited edition medal upon return, as well as garden party complete with live music and a barbecue.
Sophie Wallace, events manager at the KM Charity Team which organises the event, said: “We are very moved by Debbie’s story, and are so pleased that she and her family have chosen our event to help raise money for such an important cause. Last year, we raised more than £20,000, so we are hoping that we can gather even more life-changing money in 2016.”
Booking is charged at £11.50 per adult and children under 16 go free. Walkers are encouraged to gain sponsorship for their trek and can fundraise for their favourite charitable causes, or ones directly liked with the event.
The KM Charity Walk is supported by Specsavers, Gullands Solicitors, Benenden Hospital, and Cotswold Outdoor.
