RUNNERS from Kent are recovering today after taking part in the 25th London Marathon on Sunday.

Two runners spoke about the experience shortly after crossing the finishing line.

Dave Root, a snowboarding instructor at the John Nike Ski Centre in Chatham, was running his first marathon

After recovering from meningitis, the 24-year-old was determined to help others fighting the virus and has raised £900 for the national charity.

Dave completed the marathon in just under four-and-a-half hours. He said: "I didn’t find the run too bad until I stopped, then the pain really hit me and my legs really began to ache.

"I had family and friends watching me run and I managed to spot them on the way round, which was really encouraging. I am definitely thinking about running another London Marathon."

Mike Kirby, 47, assistant head teacher at Chatham Grammar School for Girls, ran his fifth London Marathon and has raised £1,000 so far for Children with Leukaemia.

The head of IT at the school in Rainham Road crossed the finish line after just after the four-hour mark and felt the pain instantly.

Mike said: "The weather made a big difference this year. My muscles were aching and my legs felt like they were giving up on me towards the end, but the atmosphere has been fantastic.

"The crowds have been brilliant. Their shouting and cheering really keeps you going and makes sure you don’t stop.

"I didn’t manage to beat my best time of three hours and 42 minutes, but I have a lot of sponsorship money to collect. The total should be about £5,000."
