Medway prepares for high wire charity drama

Brave daredevils will be testing their nerve this weekend, taking part in Medway’s first high wire walk.

But one participant will be finding the balancing act more of a challenge than most.

Aaron Ross, 23, from Maidstone is registered blind but isn’t fazed by the feat.

He said:“I heard about the high-wire event on kmfm and it sounded like quite a challenge. I’ve always wanted to do something like this.”

Aaron has completed several other events for charity, including the London marathon, but has never done anything like this before.

He added:“I try to do something for charity evey year and I have always fancied doing something involving heights like an abseil, so doing the high wire seemed like a great idea.

“I have collected quite a bit of sponsorship money and it should be a really good day. My wife and family will be there to cheer me on. I can’t wait to do it.”

The high wire walk takes place on the top floor of Slip No.3 at Chatham’s Historic Dockyard on Saturday. The 170-year-old wooden-framed building was once used to build warships.

Around 30 people will be crossing the 20ft steel cable, suspended 60ft in the air. Participants will be fitted to a harness and given three minutes to complete the challenge.

There will be a prize for the person who crosses the wire the fastest.

The proceeds from the event will be split between two causes; children’s road safety group Kent and Medway Walking Bus and cancer charity CLIC Sargent which provides specialist care and support for young patients and their families.
