PARENTS need to make financial plans for their son or daughter with a learning disability after their lifetime, says Mencap.
The charity is offering a free information event to parents on Thursday, September 22, from 10am-12 noon at Main Hall, Centrepiece Church, Bank Street, Ashford.
An independent local expert will provide parents living in the Ashford area with the necessary information.
Mencap says that leaving someone with a learning disability a lump sum could affect, or even stop, their benefit entitlement. If they have limited understanding of money, and need support managing their finances, they could also be open to financial abuse from unscrupulous individuals.
Aarti Puri, in-house solicitor at Mencap, said: "This seminar is an ideal opportunity for parents of people with a learning disability to get reliable information about securing the future of their children. It's about providing peace of mind."
The workshops are part of a national programme of events by Mencap. Parents will find out about making a will, setting up a trust fund and what happens if no plans are made. An information pack will be available.
