Prize-winning young artists were over the moon after the unveiling of a mural incorporating their stunning designs on a wall at their school.
The KM Charity Team’s Superhero Art Contest was run in partnership with Dover print and design company Buckland Media.
Primary schools were invited to submit superhero-themed artwork created by their pupils, with the best entries being reproduced in a mural at the winning school by Buckland Media.
The winning school was St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary in Gillingham.
Buckland Media production and customer service manager Richard Archer said: “The entries were really good. St Augustine’s had multiple classes with multiple children all putting in good drawings of a level that was above what was expected.
“And it was very good to see the diversity of their superheroes: they had Wheelchair Man and a green superhero, which was great.”
“But it was extremely difficult choosing just the one winner. It was very close between several schools.”
KM Charity Team acting general manager Karen Brinkman was joined by James Sutton of Medway Council’s road-safety team for the official unveiling of their mural yesterday (Thursday, November 28). The mural has been installed on a wall of a new annex at the school.
Buckland Media has been a professional partner of the KM Charity Team for about 10 years, and sponsoring its green-travel and literacy schemes Active Wow and Buster’s Book Club for about nine months.
Mr Archer said the partnership provided his company with an opportunity to “put something back” into the community.
He added: “The KM Charity Team does a lot of good work for schools, especially the younger years.”
Karen Brinkman said: “Well done St Augustine’s and thank you so much to Buckland Media. This was such a lovely competition to host, with a really great prize.
“As Richard said, the quality of the entries was so, so good, and choosing just the one winner was a really difficult task.
“But everybody was particularly impressed by the work of St Augustine’s pupils and the enthusiastic and imaginative way the whole school community engaged with the challenge.”
Buster’s Book Club and Active Wow use a spirit of friendly competition to encourage children to read more at home and use green travel to get to and from school.
Individual schools’ classes compete against each other for weekly trophies, and the winners of monthly inter-school challenges involving schools across Kent are rewarded with vouchers to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.
And schools that sign up for Buster’s Book Club by December 1 will be entered into a draw to win two tickets for the Eurostar.
Active Wow’s other supporters are Ashford International Hotel, Volker Highways, Countrystyle Recycling, Golding Vision, Specsavers, Eurostar, Kent, Maidstone, Bexley, Medway and Ashford councils, the Morrisons Foundation and the Education People.
And Buster’s Book Club is also supported by the Education People, Golding Vision, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment and Medway and Kent councils.
