This week pupils in Sidcup received a celebrity storyteller visit thanks to their walk to school success.
Kusama Class from Longlands Primary School won a countywide competition challenging schools to notch up the highest green travel journeys on October 3.
As a reward pupils enjoyed a special assembly featuring Joanna Adeyinka-Burford of CBeebies’ The Let’s Go Club.
The actress and television presenter read a book voted for by the winning class entitled Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival.
The story is about a boy who grows a pair of wings and tries to hide them - until he ultimately embraces his uniqueness and inspires others to do the same.
Organised by the KM Charity Team, the walk to school challenge was open to schools in Kent, Medway, Bexley, and Bromley taking part in its green travel schemes Super Wow (Walk on Wednesday) and Green Footsteps.
Sarah Clyne, walk to school project officer at the charity, said: “Kusama Class are worthy winners and it gave them great pleasure to share their fantastic prize with the rest of the school.
“Joanna is always a hit with the children and a wonderful ambassador not only for green travel but also for reading. She really brings the books to life with her animated storytelling.”
Super Wow encourages families to walk to school at least once a week and classes compete to be awarded the Green Class of the Week Trophy.
Monthly inter-school challenges award classes that are top or most improved in the district tickets to leisure attractions or visits by storytellers.
Organisations supporting the KM Charity Team’s green travel work with schools include Whites Transport, Ashford International Hotel, Orbit, Volker Highways, Countrystyle Recycling, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), Specsavers, Eurostar, Kent County Council, Medway Council, London Borough of Bexley, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Whitefriars, Maidstone Borough Council, Ashford Borough Council, EduKit, and London Array.
