Canterbury’s KM Big Charity Quiz raised more than £8,000 for good causes on Friday night.
The packed University of Kent sports hall played host to 38 teams competing for a range of prizes. The event was staged by a small army of volunteers from the benefiting charities of Catching Lives, League of friends at Canterbury Hospital and the KM Charity Team.
Quiz regulars Supernova eventually triumphed after a late surge on the night to pip The Dreadful Tiebreakers, one of five teams from The Unicorn pub in St Dunstan’s, Canterbury, by two points to take the quiz crown. Supernova have competed at the event for almost a decade but this is the first time they have won the event in the cathedral city.
Prizes were also presented to the top placed team from the NHS, which went to the Moomins. The local government prize was awarded to team Luck and Catching Lives came top out of the nine teams from the University of Kent. The top four teams on the night will be invited to take part in the county final of the KM Big Charity Quiz and will take on top placed teams from sister events staged in Medway, Maidstone and Ashford.
Simon Dolby from the KM Charity Team praised the support of Shepherd Neame, who donated the beverages for the bar, and volunteers from Canterbury Barclays bank, who manned it and doubled all the proceeds raised at the event.
Celia Buxton from the Canterbury Academy was scorer for the event, which was sponsored by MHA MacIntyre Hudson accountants, P&O Ferries, Blean Village Londis and the University of Kent sports department.
Mr Dolby said: “The support of Sheps and Barclays was critical to the success of the event – all the charities benefiting from the event are so very grateful to the organisations and volunteers that supported the event.”
