With less than a month until the 21st Anniversary KM Charity Walk, many participants county-wide are making their final preparations.
One women tackling the 10 mile stroll on Sunday, June 26 is striding the road to recovery following an operation earlier this year.
Marian Youngman, 80, of St. Andrews Gardens, Shepherdswell, said: “I underwent a complex knee operation at the end of January. As a keen walker, I sincerely hope the 10 mile trek at the Charity Walk will be achievable by the end of June. I’m currently walking five to six miles which is vastly different to my usual ability, but the road to recovery is a long and difficult one.”
She added: “I’m taking part in the walk for a number of reasons. Fitness and leisure is extremely important to me, and when I’m at the peak of my ability, I walk the 16 mile Five Churches Walk over the May Bank Holiday. I’ll be raising funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance which is a service so important and one that perhaps I will need one day.”
The family challenge day provides ramblers the option of both five and 10 mile routes. Starting and concluding at Maidstone’s Grade II Georgian mansion Mote House, walkers will pass through much charming Kentish countryside as well as Leeds Castle; also known as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’.
All participants will be presented with a limited edition medal upon return, as well as garden party complete with live music and a barbecue.
Sophie Wallace, events manager at the KM Charity Team which organises the event, said: “Despite her age and dealing with the impact of major surgery, Marian is still lacing up her walking boots and getting ready to take on the trek. She is a very inspirational women and we wish her the very best with her recovery and her fundraising. There is still time to secure your place at the 21st anniversary walk, so come and join us as we march through some of the county’s most beautiful scenery.”
Booking is charged at £11.50 per adult and children under 16 go free. Walkers are encouraged to gain sponsorship for their trek and can fundraise for their favourite charitable causes, or ones directly liked with the event.
