Hundreds of fund-raisers took to the streets at midnight to raise money for a hospice.

Six hundred and thirty five people took part in the women-only half-marathon Moonlit Walk on Saturday night, to raise money for the Heart of Kent Hospice.

The 13-mile hike, which started and ended at Kings Hill Community Centre and took walkers to the grounds of the hospice at Preston Hall, Aylesford, was started by Ann Widdecombe, MP for Maidstone and the Weald.

At the end they were greeted with a well-earned bacon roll or vegetarian sausage bap, served by the Territorial Army. Organisers hope to have raised more than £75,000 from the event.

It was an extra poignant night for Fiona Stilwell, who walked in memory of her partner and line-dance teacher Colin Tremain, who died on June 30, from lung cancer, aged 67. So far, she has raised £3,000.

She said: “It was wonderful, there was a sea of pink and I really felt his presence. The hospice was wonderful and gave us time to be together without any worries, which is a precious thing.”

Spokesman for the hospice Jennie Hubbard said: “It was an amazing evening”
