Children from Sheppey Beavers have helped to smash a Guinness World Record.

Nearly 50 children joined in with the Giant Sleepover at Richmond First School, as one of more than 1,500 sleepovers simultaneously taking place around the country.

It beat the previous record for the biggest sleepover in the world which was set in 2006.

The Giant Sleepover is to raise money for Save the Children’s Children’s Emergency Fund.

As well as working towards their outdoor challenge and fitness badges, the beavers also spent some time crabbing at Barton’s Point.

After a walk back along the beach collecting various items, they all made collages when they got back to the school.

They also did some knotting and learnt how to put tents up, which went towards their outdoor challenge badge.

All the children then spent the night sleeping in tents inside the school in Nursery Close, Sheerness.

The next morning, along with more than 33,000 children taking part in other sleepovers, all the Sheppey Beavers brushed their teeth together.

Gloria Yates, assistant district commissioner for beavers, said: “I am very pleased with how it went and we were lucky with the weather.

“The children really enjoyed it and even before they left they were all asking when we can do it again.”
