A social landlord is encouraging school children in Kent and Medway to join millions worldwide in stepping out for International Walk to School Month.
Each October the event serves as a global reminder to reduce car use to cut traffic congestion and pollution and enjoy the benefits of regular exercise.
Green travel supporter Circle Housing Russet is urging families to make an extra special effort to walk, cycle or scooter to school as many times as possible this month.
Marilyn Smith, sustainable communities manager, said: “Encouraging families to walk to school not only helps children adopt a healthier lifestyle and improves the environment for local communities, but it will help save money on petrol and public transport costs too.
“Visit Circle Housing’s website Do1Thing.org.uk to discover other simple ways families can work together to save money by reducing their energy consumption.”
Simon Dolby of the KM Walk to School campaign said: “Walk to School Month is a fantastic way to put green travel in the spotlight. Seeing countless children laughing and smiling with friends and family as they walk to school is a wonderful example to the wider community."
He added: “The humble walk to school has a powerful impact; helping pupils to develop healthy habits and learn road safety awareness while reducing the number of cars crowding the school gates and local roads.”
