Margate's Winter Gardens will be buzzing on Saturday (Aug 30) when Broadstairs Rotary Club holds its Swinging '60s show.

The money raised from the event will be donated towards the group’s chosen charities. On the bill will be 1960s bands Marmalade and The Fortunes and singer Johnny Leyton.

Marmalade enjoyed chart success in the late 1960s and early '70s with a string of pop classics, including their version of The Beatles’ Ob La Di Ob La Da, Cousin Norman, Reflections of My Life, and Baby Make It Soon.

Following on in the wake of Merseybeat, and the R&B of The Rolling Stones, The Fortunes added another dimension to the sound of the classic pop song with sophisticated orchestration, dual lead vocals and stylish counter-melodies.

The result was a succession of distinctive and distinguished hit records including You’ve Got Your Troubles, Here It Comes Again and more successful releases in the '70s, such as Storm in a Teacup and Freedom Come, Freedom Go. Add to this the 1964 classic Caroline which was used as the signature tune for the influential pirate radio station of the same name.

Johnny Leyton’s first record was Tell Laura I Love Her, followed by the smash hit Johnny Remember Me and its follow up Wild Wind. He later appeared in films, including The Great Escape, with Frank Sinatra in Von Ryan’s Express, and Krakatoa East of Java.
