It was a battle of the brawn when teams displayed their physical fitness to take part in the 36 Challenge.

It happened in The Mall Chequers, Maidstone, on Saturday, when teams from the Army and police plus local leisure centres, competed to be crowned champions.

The event, which started in 2007, was raising money for the fund which hopes to provide a lasting memorial at Invicta Barracks in Maidstone, home to the 36 Engineer Regiment, for soldiers who have lost their lives in service. Some money will also be donated to the regiment's welfare fund.

Last year's winners, Bob Prowse Health Club, were on hand to defend their title against Kent Police, Maidstone Leisure Centre, Wardlow Warriors, Invicta Green Warriors and Village Athena Kilimanjaro.

The Mayor, Cllr Denise Joy, officially opened the event together with Lt Col Richard Wardlow, the commanding officer of the 36 Engineer Regiment.
