CREST Nicholson is offering buyers the opportunity to own a piece of Kentish history.
The company is transforming the site of the former Stock and Cattle Market at Tonbridge into Market Quarter, a scheme of one and two-bedroom apartments, two-bedroom duplex apartments and three-bedroom townhouses that have been designed to complement and enhance the surrounding architecture in this conservation area.
Located next to Tonbridge Castle, the site has a rich history dating back to the 11th century.
The market was originally located at the castle, which was constructed by Richard Fitzgilbert (known as Richard de Clare) following the Norman Conquest in 1066.
It was not until 1241 that Tonbridge was first mentioned as a borough, which confirms that until the mid-13th century it was a small settlement.
In the years that followed, many alterations and additions were made to the castle including the Gatehouse built by 1258. In the following year Henry III granted a licence for a market to be held in the church grounds.
The stock and cattle market was moved in 1285 to the High Street, at its junction with Castle Street, where the site is now being revived by Crest Nicholson.
Along with a collection of bespoke new-build properties, Crest Nicholson is converting the former corn exchange. Built in 1791 as a Congregational chapel it was later sold to the cattle market in 1875 when it was modified for its new role.
Crest Nicholson has transformed the redundant building into four duplex apartments. In contrast to the classical design of the exterior façade that features a portico, interiors are fresh and contemporary. Layouts are spacious and open plan and have a spiral staircase.
The remainder of the homes at the scheme are on the site of the former cattle market.
The new build section of Market Quarter is a bespoke development. The architecture is striking and provides stylish homes, while complementing the nearby buildings.
The three-bedroom townhouses extend across three floors and have a wealth of character. All kitchens are complete with Commodore units complemented with integrated Neff appliances.
To preserve the history of the site, before construction started Crest Nicholson commissioned an archaeological excavation and the results have significantly added to the historical knowledge of the foundation and development of Tonbridge and will be published and supplied to libraries and schools throughout the area.
Prices at Market Quarter begin at £230,000 for a two-bedroom apartment and £315,000 for a two-bedroom house in the converted corn exchange. For information call the sales and marketing suite on 01732 371941, open Thursday to Monday 10am to 5pm.
