Each year at least 50 people die from gas-related carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, mainly because their gas appliances have not been properly installed or maintained. But these figures could be just the tip of the iceberg.
Ei Electronics, which manufactures domestic smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, is working with charities and the public to promote CO Awareness Month in October.
Carbon monoxide is produced as a result of incomplete burning of carbon fuels. You can’t see it or taste it or smell it, but it can cause permanent damage and even kill.
Common symptoms include:
Mild headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Vomiting
Fatigue
Drowsiness
Coma and even death.
To protect yourself against the ‘invisible killer’ never use a gas appliance if you think it’s not working properly.
Signs to look out for include yellow or orange flames.
To stay safe never cover an appliance, block the convection air vents, ventilation grilles or air bricks.
Never cover outside flues.
Have gas appliances services annually by a CORGI-- registered installer.
An audible carbon monoxide alarm such as the Ei204 alarm, is available from stores including Homebase, Sainsbury’s, Wilkinsons, Woolworths and Robert Dyas for about £20.
Meeting current safety standards [ BS EN 50291] and carrying the Kitemark, the Ei204 will audibly alert you to the presence of carbon monoxide in your home or on holiday.
