AN OUTLINE planning application has been submitted by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) to bring about the regeneration of the former Snowdown Colliery site, near Canterbury.

Permission is being sought to build 250,000 sq ft of business space at the site, along with the creation of a 30-hectare country park featuring footpaths, a picnic area and information points relating to the mining history of the colliery and the area’s unique mix of rare animals and plants.

SEEDA will build 50,000 sq ft of speculative business space to kick-start the development. It is anticipated that the project will create in the region of 400 new jobs.

Mike Terry, SEEDA senior project manager, said: "Submitting the planning application is a significant step towards the regeneration of the site.

The area is considered of high ecological value due to its history and setting, and has unique flora and fauna. As a result we will be endeavouring to protect that ecology as we redevelop the site, and will adopt high sustainability standards both for the new buildings and the site as a whole."

Cllr Frederick Scales, Dover District Council Cabinet Member for Economy, said: "While we must stress we cannot pre-judge any planning decisions taken in due course, we certainly welcome the opportunity to create new jobs and recreational facilities.

"Together with the Aylesham expansion programme, this is a great opportunity to help create a sustainable community for the future."

Billy Oliver, chairman of the Snowdown Regeneration Forum, said: "SEEDA and the Snowdown Regeneration Forum have worked for five years to reach this stage. The employment that will be provided at the site will be a valuable asset to the expansion of the community."

Snowdown is between Aylesham and Nonington which together have a population of 4,700.
