Looking after the pennies

SAVE your loose change in a jar or bottle? Then chances are you're a Northerner, according to new research from the Halifax.

Around two thirds (63 per cent) of adults aged more than 15 save their loose change in a container. Of these, about a third have £20 or more saved.

The Scots are the most likely to save their loose change, with Northerners in general more likely than those from the Midlands or the South. While those in the South use a moneybox, people in the Midlands and the North are more likely to use some sort of jar or bottle.

Men save more frequently, with almost three-quarters putting away their small coins at least every couple of days. They are also likely to have more saved than women, with around a fifth having £50 or more saved compared to around a tenth of women.
