HISTORY plays a major role in the character of three cottages for sale at Ward & Partners’ next auction. The properties, all with a wealth of beams, were once used by villagers in their rope-making. They each have three bedrooms and overlook the green at Groombridge.
The village is steeped in history. Its name derives from the Saxon name for “the bridge of men” or a Saxon noble called Gromen who is believed to have built a bridge. The word “Gromenlike” has survived in our language as “groom” or “men.” The cottages have guide prices starting from £140,000-plus.
Kevin Gilbert, auctioneer for Ward & Partners, said: “Picturesque country cottages are many people’s dream house, particularly those that require improvement and renovation.”
Also up for auction are a period semi-detached cottage in Sissinghurst (guide price £95,000-plus) and two period cottages in Chart Sutton, one as an investment and the other with vacant possession upon completion. Each property has a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms and three bedrooms. The guide price is £170,000-plus for the two.
The auction will be held at the Ramada Hotel, Maidstone, and a copy of the catalogue can be obtained from Ward & Partners’ hotline: 0906 558 1288.
