HOMEOWNERS who are not prepared to sell their properties are being encouraged to consider the benefits of letting.

John Hards, operations director of Countrywide Residential Lettings, said: "We receive more 60,000 enquiries a year from people wanting to rent, but there simply aren't enough properties of the right quality to meet the demand."

Mr Hards added: "People are often surprised at the higher rents which can be achieved if properties are upgraded, bringing kitchens and bathrooms into line with modern expectations. Often, redecoration in a neutral colour, with neutral soft furnishings can do the trick."
