WE RECYCLE bottles and cans...so why not furniture? Obviously, we would not want to tamper with precious antiques but dated shabby items can be transformed into modern chic.

Rummaging through the attic I have found real little gems ready to receive the Deveda paint treatment.

Items covered in wax polish need to be stripped back before any new finish is applied. A specialist finish such as a two-tone distressed, stippled or drag painted finish are simple and effective. But make sure you design the furniture to suit the room.

A good quality bevelled edge mirror is worth keeping. Either set it in a new frame or give the old frame a new look. If possible take it apart prior to any alterations. Art and craft shops have a huge selection of possible materials including metallic leaf and spray paints.

Old sofas and chairs may appreciate being re-upholstered. It is not cheap to have a professional do the work but if the base of the furniture is solid hardwood it could be worth the investment, and you can can choose the fabric.

Cutting down, adding on, smoothing the rough are all terms that describe the changes being made to your furniture or artefact. I have cut down a pine sideboard to transform it into a slim-line hall cabinet and added larger table tops to sit on smaller tables.

Altering plain fire surrounds or adding glass to wooden panelled doors are quick and easy makeovers.

It is just a question of using you imagination and creative skills to bring back to life a neglected piece of furniture. Boot fairs and junk shops are an excellent source for such items.
