A five-bedroom farmhouse which was once the coastal retreat of the R White’s Lemonade family is on the market. Dating from the mid 1600s it has a typical Kentish farmhouse look.
The farm, near Herne Bay, overlooks Chislet marshes and the now silted-up Wantsum Channel, which once separated the Isle of Thanet from the rest of Kent.
Robert and Mary White produced the first R White’s Lemonade in Camberwell, London, in 1845. Records show their family later owned the farmhouse over a 70-year period. The company became part of Britvic in 1986.
The current owners bought the property in 2006 in a neglected state and it has since been given a sympathetic refurbishment.
The three-storey, five-bedroom farmhouse is Grade II listed and comes with a thatched barn, numerous outbuildings, stores and stables.
There is a heated outdoor swimming pool and gardens and grounds totalling 11 acres.
The principal residence dates from the mid-1600s and has a typical Kentish farmhouse look to the front. At the back, though, a 19th century facade has been added, with a classical Georgian look, white stuccoed rendering, central panelled entrance door with pilasters.
The kitchen has a stone floor, exposed brick to one wall, a deep butler sink, an Aga and the original water pump. Other period features include polished wood board floors, stripped board floors, brick and inglenook fireplaces, exposed brickwork, original shutters and polished and exposed timbers.
There are two well proportioned reception rooms with sash cord windows, a ‘secret door’ to a former study, now a playroom.
On the first floor, there is a principal bedroom suite with en-suite bathroom with copper bath, two further double bedrooms and a shower room.
On the second floor, there is a guest bedroom suite with en-suite bathroom, playroom and fifth double bedroom.
The garden is reached off the lane by electronically operated double gates leading to a gravel parking and turning area, with central lawn area.
Price: £1.25 million
