ABOUT 100 extra jobs have been created at a Canterbury supermarket.

They have come about following Morrison’s take-over of the Safeway store at Wincheap.

At 6pm on Saturday, September 3, the store will close so it can be converted into a Morrison supermarket. It will re-open at 9am on Thursday, September 8.

In preparation the company has created 100 full and part-time jobs.

The extra staff at the store will include a butcher with expertise in cutting and packing meat tailored to customers’ needs, a fishmonger offering a 48-hour ordering service, check-out staff to man the new tills and more warehouse staff to ensure shelves are always kept well-stocked.

“The recruitment programme was a great success and we created roles right across the store,” said general manager David Denham.

“We now have a first-class team in place to ensure we give the very best service to new and regular shoppers, more choice on fresh foods, competitive pricing alongside many special offers and extra value.”

Morrison’s headquarters confirmed this week that neither of Canterbury’s two stores will be among those sold to Waitrose in an upcoming deal.
