If you're one of probably a handful of drivers who believes that the V8 F-Type is a little too monstrous but find the standard V6 mysteriously underwhelming then Jaguar might just have the car for you.
It's called the F-Type 400 Sport and is a 2018-only model. It adds another 20bhp to the S model's already impressive 375.
Other tweaks include the addition of enhanced configurable dynamics and Jaguar's Super Performance braking system with 380mm discs at the front and 376mm at the rear. The only transmission available is the excellent eight-speed auto but you can couple that to either rear or four-wheel-drive.
There are a few cosmetic changes too, but they only extend as far as unique alloy wheels, and a smattering of 400 Sport logos. You also get access to the ReRun video app designed for track day use. It appeared first with the SVR but it’s rolling out across the range.
Jaguar's own figures suggest that there's nothing to be gained from splashing out the additional £6,000 for the 400 Sport with the zero to 62mph sprint time of 4.9 seconds and 171mph top speed both identical to the less powerful, and cheaper, F-Type S.
The most fundamental difference between the 400 and its V6 siblings is not, in fact, how it goes but rather in how it stops. The brakes have a strong, consistent bite with no evidence of fade and it's here, during entry into corners, that the Sport will start to put some distance between it and other V6 models.
Everything else is pretty much as you were. Fortunately the F-Type is blessed with sharp, accurate steering and a gearbox that is responsive in manual mode and intelligent in automatic when it seldom puts a cog wrong.
You’ll still enjoy the outrageously cacophonous sound of the V6 at start-up as it roars the neighbours awake and spits and crackles angrily when you lift of the accelerator. It’s a glorious symphony of booms and barks that brings even greater drama to what is already an exciting and involving drive, especially in the convertible.
Given that the differences between the limited-run 400 Sport and other V6-powered F-Types are, at best, minimal it might seem hard to justify the close to £6,000 premium over the 375bhp S model but while the changes might be incremental, they do make a tangible difference.
The extra cash isn’t just buying extra power, better brakes and a fettled chassis, you’re also buying into what will be a pretty exclusive club and for some it will be a price worth paying.
