A NUMBER of flights are being diverted to London Ashford Airport in Kent to alleviate some of the problems caused by thick fog at the UK's major airports.

Operations at the Lydd airport have been unaffected by the poor weather conditions that have troubled Heathrow, Gatwick and London City Airport and led to thousands of passengers facing delays and cancellations.

A Swiss-based airline’s flight from Geneva, which was due to fly into London City Airport, flew into Lydd instead and more than 40 passengers who were expecting to return to Geneva from London City Airport were bussed into LAA for their flight.

Thick fog has also forced a French-based airline to divert one of its CRJ2 aircraft to LAA. The aircraft is due to leave Lydd carrying nearly 40 passengers to Scotland.

Several other charter aircraft are also using Lydd.
