Late bus service is cut

An evening bus service to one of the farthest-flung parts of Medway is to be cut, although it is regularly used by 30 passengers a night.

The 191 late buses to Hoo and Grain are to be axed, meaning the last 191 from Chatham will leave at 6.30pm.

It is just one of a number of cuts being made by Medway Council as it tries to save some of its subsidies on public transport.

Services 176 to Hazlemere Drive, Gillingham and 140 to the Earl Estate, Strood, will be halved in just over two months.

Several off-peak journeys on other routes will be dropped, while the 145, 165 and 166 services will be combined in the evening to create a common route, with buses running every 90 minutes.

The changes will save £55,000.

But the council still expects to spend £40,000 more than it originally budgeted this year.

A further change sees the award of the Rainham Mark school buses to a new operator from September.

Several operators have bid to take on the contract which calls for four buses to meet growing demand from pupils and parents. However, officers refused to name the successful operator even though the decision had been made by cabinet.

American-style yellow buses to the Howard School, Rainham, and Chatham South School will continue to be operated by Nu-Venture under a sub-contract from First Buses.
