A bid to prevent heavy goods vehicles causing misery on rural roads is under way in Maidstone.

Officers from the rural neighbourhood team are patrolling areas in Leeds, Teston and Wateringbury and are keeping an eye out for drivers ignoring weight and width restrictions.

PC Stuart Russell-Thomas from Kent police is co-ordinating the operation, he says the practice of flouting restrictions is commonplace.

"It creates a problem for local residents, as it creates unnecessary noise, causes congestion, and could even lead to the collapse of the bridges in Teston and East Farleigh if it continues.

"Although we do believe satellite navigation systems direct vehicles along the roads, drivers are failing to observe signs and we intend to deal with them" he said.
