Road closed for "weak" bridge upgrade

Motorists face six weeks of disruption while a railway bridge is made safe for heavy traffic.

Work to install a permanent single lane traffic system at Halling will start in August.

A temporary system using traffic lights, barriers and signs has been in place for the past few months.

It was installed after an inspection revealed the bridge was not suitable for vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes.

During the six week project the bridge will be closed to all traffic, including buses. It will remain open to pedestrians.

Buses for Halling will use the single-lane arrangements by turning in Low Meadow. Ferry Road will be opened outside the medical centre in one direction only, to allow cars to leave the estate.

Heavy goods vehicles will be prevented from using this route by reducing the width of the road and there will be no entry into the estate along Ferry Road.
