Lorries heading across the Channel are once again being stacked up - but this time on the A20.

Kent police have implemented their new holding area because of a build up of congestion in Dover town centre due to berthing problems at Calais.

The scheme was only trialled for the first time at the weekend and allows freight vehicles to be stopped on the A20.

Under the new system, lorries approaching Dover on will be put in a temporary holding area while phase one of Operation Stack is set up on the M20.

The lorries will be separated into a queue on the nearside lane with the outside lane remaining open to other traffic.

Freight traffic in the queue will then be called forward to the Docks as space becomes available there.

Assistant Chief Constable Allyn Thomas said: "It means we can work more closely with the ferry operators to make sure that the services they are running are loaded to capacity, which will make the port operation as effective as possible."
