WITH around a million car crime incidents happening in the United Kingdom every year, Jet has put together some guidelines to keep motorists, particularly women, safe.

These include:

* When parking your car, look out for car parks that have achieved "secure" status. In 1992, the Association of Chief Police Officers launched the Secured Car Parks Scheme to encourage higher security standards and crime prevention in car parks - not only will these have better lighting, but they will have regular patrols as well.

* Ensure that your car is in good working order - get it serviced regularly at a good garage.

* Keep a supply of de-icer to hand.

* If you feel vulnerable travelling alone, invest in a mobile phone.

* Join a well-known breakdown organisation.

* Plan your journey and don't stop to ask strangers for directions. If you get lost, find the nearest filling station and ask staff to help you.

* When driving or waiting at lights, be aware of what's happening around you. Keep doors locked and valuables out of sight.

* Road rage is a part of modern life. If you find yourself in a confrontational situation, avoid eye contact and conversation and if forced to stop, remain in your car with your engine running and speak through a slightly opened window.

* Finally, if you are a woman on your own and break down on a motorway, always inform the emergency services or breakdown company. While waiting for help, stay on the verge and only get back in the vehicle if someone approaches you.
