Motorists making their way to work via the Medway Tunnel had an unexpected 30 minutes added to their journey due to road works.

The Strood bound lane was narrowed down to one lane on Wednesday just before the University turn off causing tailbacks as far as the Strand.

Traffic coming from Medway Road and trying to join Pier Road near Medway Police Station was also affected.

Medway police has requested the cones stay in place all day for safety reasons so the repairs can continue tonight.

Full repairs are expected to be completed by tonight and the tunnel be fully operational in both directions by tomorrow morning .

The tunnel will be closed again on Thursday night from 8pm to 5.45am as previously advertised.
