Unrealistic, unenforceable and criminalising those who already obey the rules – your reaction to calls to bring in 20mph speed limits in all residential areas in the county.
In our online poll around two-thirds of you were against the Kent Green Party’s idea to reduce speed limits by 10mph across built-up areas in Kent. The Greens argue doing so will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
J Whiting from east Kent asked: "Do those advocating this really think it will make a lot of difference or is it being done for publicity reasons?
“I live in a road where there are very prominent signs saying 20mph - but if one in 100 vehicles takes any notice you are very lucky.”
Lisa from Margate wrote: "Education of drivers is the key not legislation. The county is suffering from a rash of ridiculous speed limit reductions without consulation or reason.
"These proposals are unrealistic and will criminalise those who already obey the rules."
Gavin, who gave his location only as Kent, suggested: "It would make no difference because people would soon realise a 20mph speed limit is not enforceable. It would just be a waste of money changing signs."
The notion wasn't without an element of support though.
Dungeness's Robbie Craig wrote: "I fail to see how these proposals would crimilise those who already obey the rules. If it is 20 and you are doing 30 you are breaking the law, are a bad driver and a criminal.
"The other views people have expressed on this suggest they lack social responsibility. It is one thing to break a limit on a motorway but residential streets belong to all of us. If bad drivers cannot respect that then perhaps they should surrender their licenses."
