Split ends and beards were trimmed en-masse after hairdressers and barbers reopened, with a survey suggesting around one in 10 adults attended appointments.

Nine per cent of adults in Britain visited a hair salon or barber in the week starting July 1, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

A further 10% ate or drank in a restaurant, cafe, bar or pub while 15% collected takeaway food from these establishments.

The survey, which analysed responses from 1,743 people between July 8 and 12, asked about their behaviour over the previous week amid a key loosening of lockdown restrictions.

Pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants in England were able to reopen for the first time since lockdown on July 4, which was also when salons and barbers opened their doors.

Men were more likely to eat out or pick up takeaways, while more women visited salons, the ONS found.

Hugh Stickland, ONS head of strategy and engagement, said: “As the lockdown restrictions continue to lift, we can see that people are slowly returning to social activities, meeting with friends and family and becoming a little more comfortable with eating out.

“This most recent survey shows most people are still taking precautions, including maintaining social distancing and increasingly using face coverings when leaving the house.”

The survey shows more people are feeling comfortable with the idea of eating inside at a restaurant compared with the previous week.

Nearly three in 10 adults (27%) said they would be comfortable or very comfortable eating indoors at a restaurant compared with two in 10 adults (20%) last week.

Just over half (52%) said they would be uncomfortable or very uncomfortable, compared with six in 10 (60%) last week.

And the number of people wearing face coverings and happy to do so in future is also rising.

In the seven days prior to the survey, 61% of adults who left their homes wore a face covering – up from 52% the previous week.

A similar proportion – 62% – said they were either very or fairly likely to wear one in the next seven days, irrespective of whether they had worn one previously.
