A “large number” of reindeer blocked a dual carriageway in Suffolk on Sunday, causing major delays.

The animals wandered onto the A11 near Barton Mills stopping vehicles in both directions at around 3:20pm.

Suffolk Police closed the road and tried to catch the reindeer, which eventually left the road at around 5:20pm when the carriageway was reopened.

In an update on X, National Highways East said: “@suffolkpolice have closed the #A11 near #BartonMills in both directions between #A1134 #Thetford and #A1101 due to several deer loose in carriageway.

“Plans are being made to get traffic within the closure released and we will update as soon as we get further news from scene.”

In an update at 4.45pm, National Highways East said a “large number” of reindeer were on the road and that police were “trying to catch them”.
