Nestlé has announced it is to scrap a sweet that has been on sale for more than 60 years.

The confectioner, in a message on its website, confirmed it is discontinuing the Caramac bar.

Packaged in bright red and yellow wrapping, the caramel-flavoured bar took its name from an abbreviation of caramel and Mackintosh’s - the name of the company which originally launched it back in 1959.

Because the bar doesn't contain cocoa – Caramac is not technically classed as chocolate.

But after more than six decades the sweet treat is to disappear.

The website message from Nestlé reads: “We are very sorry to disappoint fans, unfortunately we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue Caramac.

“We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will enable us to focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers’ tastebuds.”

But the decision has sparked a flurry of social media posts asking for the company to change its mind – while videos show Caramac fans stockpiling large boxes of the red and yellow bar.

One fan writing on X – formerly Twitter – pleaded: “What. Please. God. No! Nestle please tell me you’re not ditching #Caramac it’s the only ‘chocolate’ I eat! Don’t let it disappear! I love the stuff!”

While another declared: “Woke up to the news that Caramac is being discontinued and it quite frankly has ruined my day.”
